This is only because we are constantly telling them things they already know. They’ve tried working on it and they’ve failed every time they’ve given it a new attempt. It just beats me! I have no idea why despite all the right intent to work on it, they don’t seem to get it right. Arrgghhh!!!
This is every Manager’s pain, they continue to feel defeated by their own teams, assuming that they lack intent. However, the question they have is: “What can change the game for them?” “They are so hardworking, where am I going wrong in guiding them?” “I don’t know what else can be done.”
These voices hound every manager, does it sound familiar to you?
Try this next time. Understand what each of your team members are naturally good at, evaluate what are the things they do that gives them instant energy, note that down and build a plan around it. Use their strengths to overcome their weaknesses. Show them how they can naturally amplify their performance by only consciously using what they do well. Then show them how to further elevate it to manage what they lack.
Here’s an example: Someone lacks Communication Skills, is not able to proactively communicate or for that matter even initiate a conversation with a client. Thinks twice and still chooses to not voice their thoughts. However, the same person is very good at building relationships with strong bonds. Don’t work on improving their Communication Skills, instead ask them to work on creating a bond with the client. Tell them that don’t worry if you can’t proactively state things however, just focus on what you do to build that strong relationship with someone. Once you accomplish that, just naturally let your conversation flow into your relationship.
This will show you good results as you are getting your team to do what they like and are good at.
Try it, it works!
